Cloud infrastructure and payment card to create a free Microsoft Azure account

What is Microsoft Azure?

Microsoft Azure is Microsoft's cloud computing platform. Developers and businesses can build processing resources and managed services on demand without purchasing and maintaining physical infrastructure.

  • Building and running a virtual server or Virtual Machine
  • Website, API and application hosting
  • Use of cloud storage and database
  • Implementation of artificial intelligence and data analysis services
  • Construction of network and organizational infrastructure

What features does Azure Free Account have?

Azure Free Account is for new customers who have not previously received an Azure Free Account and associated credits. The current offer includes $200 in credit that can be used in the first 30 days and a monthly quota of a number of free services.

  • $200 Azure credit valid for 30 days from signup date
  • Free quota of some popular services for 12 months
  • Monthly quota of some services that are always free
  • Ability to upgrade to Pay-As-You-Go pricing for continued use

Unused credit will expire after 30 days. The list of services and free quotas may change; Before creating any resource, check the price and limitations of the same service on the Azure site.

Prerequisites for creating a free Azure account

  • An accessible Microsoft Account or GitHub Account
  • Valid phone number to receive code and verify identity
  • A non-prepaid credit or debit card accepted by Azure
  • Name, country, address and billing information that is true and consistent with the payment method

Microsoft does not guarantee acceptance of all cards, and payment method requirements vary in some countries. Do not use fake country, address or identity information.

Training to create Azure Free Account

The order and name of some options may change depending on the country, account type and Azure interface update, but the general registration path is as follows.

  1. Sign in or create a Microsoft or GitHub account
  2. Open the official Azure Free Account page
  3. Completion of identity and billing information
  4. Phone number verification
  5. Non-prepaid credit or debit card registration
  6. Accept the terms and activate the free subscription

1. Sign in with a Microsoft or GitHub account

Sign in from the official Azure Free Account page. If you don't have a Microsoft account, you can create a new account or continue with a GitHub account if you see the option.

2. Choose the Azure Free Account offer

Select the Try Azure for free option and make sure the free account offer and credit terms for your account and country are displayed.

3. Entering personal and billing information

Enter the name, surname, country or region, address, city and zip code according to the actual information and payment method. Inconsistencies in account country, billing address, and card information may result in further review or registration rejection.

4. Phone number verification

Enter a number that can receive a confirmation text or call. Register the sent code in the same step to continue the authentication process.

5. Register payment card information

Enter cardholder name, card number, expiration date, CVV and Billing Address accurately. Azure requires a non-prepaid credit or debit card for free registration, and the final acceptance decision rests with Microsoft and the card issuer.

6. Verification of conditions and activation

Read the terms of the offer and agreement and finalize the registration. After the subscription is activated, check the credit balance and usage from the Cost Management section in the Azure Portal.

Visa or Mastercard Tips for Azure

Azure officially requires a non-prepaid credit or debit card. Being virtual or having a Visa and Mastercard logo alone does not guarantee card acceptance; Card type, issuing country, billing address, and Microsoft's risk controls also play a role.

A $1 temporary hold may be placed on the card to check the payment method. This hold is not a definitive registration fee and will be released after verification, as explained by Microsoft.

  • Before getting a card, check the guide for the right Visa card for Azure
  • Enter the Billing Address exactly as provided for the card
  • Keep enough balance for possible hold and subsequent bills
  • If the card is declined, do not repeat the payment and read the Card Declined guide

Upgrade Azure Free Account to Pay-As-You-Go

At the end of 30 days or when the $200 credit runs out—whichever comes first—Azure prompts you to decide whether to upgrade. If you do not upgrade to Pay-As-You-Go, your subscription and deployed services will be disabled.

By selecting Pay-As-You-Go, usage in excess of the free quota will be charged at Azure's current rate from the registered payment method. If you upgrade before the end of the 30-day period, the remaining credit will be retained until the end of the same 30-day period.

Enabling Pay-As-You-Go means the ability to create a real cost. Before upgrading, check the active resources, the price of the selected region and the method of receiving the cost alert.

How to avoid unwanted Azure cost?

  • Check remaining credit and daily cost in Cost Management
  • Create a Budget Alert for actual and projected spending
  • Check the price and free quota of each resource before Deploy
  • Remove unnecessary resources like VM, Disk, Snapshot, Public IP, Database and Storage
  • Don't just shut down the VM; Affiliate resources may still cost money

Budget in Azure is a monitoring and alerting tool and does not stop resources or consumption by itself. For automatic stop, you need to configure a separate solution according to your resources.
